Rosatom to help Atomflot run icebreaker fleet financially

MURMANSK, June 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's state-run nuclear power
corporation Rosatom and the federal state unitarian enterprise Atomflot are capable of effective, concerted management in running the country's icebreaker fleet.
The company's general director, Sergei Kiriyenko, said Rosatom had both the financial and managerial leverage to render assistance to Atomflot in maintaining the operation of this major asset.
As an example of how the two entities may pool efforts to mutual
benefit Kiriyenko mentioned the nuclear-powered icebreaker The Taimyr,
currently returning to base from a long voyage. The icebreaker's reactor, he said, has a high fuel burnout ratio.
"If the reactor's core is not reloaded promptly - and this operation costs about 250 million rubles - the ice-breaker will be doomed to remain idle throughout the next season," Kiriyenko said. In the meantime, the funds reserved in this year's budget for reloading several icebreaker reactors total 800 billion rubles, and The Taimyr's quota is too small for the operation to be paid for in full."
However, Kiriyenko recalled that now both the nuclear fuel
manufacturer TVEL and Atomflot would be affiliated with the same state
corporation, so making a decision TVEL should produce and supply fuel for The Taimyr and be paid for it by installments would be no problem.
Russia's fleet of nuclear-powered icebreakers the Murmansk Shipping company has operated as a fiduciary so far will be handed over to the Rosatom corporation on August 27. The operator directly responsible for the fleet day-to-day activity and maintenance will be the federal state unitarian enterprise Atomflot.
