Vietnam becomes first deputy member of ILO's governing body

Geneva (VNA) - Vietnam has been elected as first deputy member of the International Labour Organisation (ILO)'s Governing Body for the 2008-2011 period at the organisation's 97th annual session being held in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 9-13.

Representing Vietnam at the session, Vice Minister of Labour, War
Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thanh Hoa highlighted Vietnam 's
promotion of the right of both workers and employers to establish and
participate in organisations to have their rights and interest protected
according to the law.

He said, "In Vietnam, freedom of association, the rights to organise and
collective bargaining are clearly stated in the Constitution, as well as the
Labour Code, the Law on Trade Union, and a number of other legal documents."

The official noted that the important thing is how this right is respected
in practice, and which concrete actions are made to protect and bring
practical benefits to both workers and employers.

The Vietnamese official briefed the conference on Vietnam 's labour
policies and their implementation, as well as on labour relations,
vocational training and job generating for labourers in the country.

He also reviewed the collaboration between the ILO and Vietnamese
partners, highlighting the organisation's technical support and a memorandum
of understanding (MoU) on cooperation between the Vietnamese government and
the ILO Office for Pacific Asia Region in 2008-2010.

He said in the time to come, Vietnam would prioritise labour market
development, human resource development, improving the quality of
employment, promoting social dialogue and sound industrial relations,
reforming wage policies, implementing voluntary social insurance scheme for
farmers and workers in informal sector, and promoting occupational safety
and health.
In Geneva , Vice Minister Hoa met with the ILO General Director and
several other senior officials to discuss technical assistance for Vietnam
.

ILO officials pledged to list Vietnam among prioritised countries in
order to implement the MoU signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour,
War Invalids and Social Affairs and the ILO in late 2007.-Enditem
