BINTAN TO ORGANIZE MALAY MARINE FESTIVAL

Bintan, Riau island Province, June 13 (ANTARA) - The Bintan District Administration will organize a Malay Marine Festival in Sebong Pereh waters, Telok Sebok sub district, Riau Islands Province, from June 21 to 22, 2008.

The festival would be highlighted with among other things a 'golek Tambelan' boat rowing competition, 'jong' boat and 'gasing' spinning competitions , Khazalik, head of the Bintan tourism office, said here on Friday.

The annual festival was expected to attract domestic and foreign tourists, he said.

Among interesting places in Bintan are Pasar Ikan (Fish Market) where fresh seafood are sold, the Akau (Night Market), Pelantar (Water Villages) and shops selling local handicraft.

There is also a natural attraction like watching the turtles laying their eggs or fishing on the Kelong. Riau Archipelago was once home a sea gypsies cruising its rich mangroves forest and waterways.
