Government hopes to attract Henan to invest in EEC
BANGKOK, March 27 (TNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak has targeted to attract China's Henan province to invest in the Thai Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), with an aim to link the aviation and electric train industries between both sides in answer to China's One Belt and One Road policy.
The deputy premier held talks with Henan Governor Mr Chen Run'er and his entourage, aimed to strengthen bilateral relationship, as well as to increase investments, air logistics, along with attract Chinese businesses to invest in Thailand's EEC through central China's Silk Road Fund.
Moreover, the talks would help create a stronger tie for bilateral tourism between Thailand and China, where the deputy premier had also accepted the Chinese government's invitation to visit Henan to ink a cooperation agreement in the middle of the year in order to keep Thailand on par with China's One Belt and One Road policy.
Industry Minister Uttama Savanayana, on the other hand, said in order to ensure clear cooperation between Thailand and Henan, a joint committee has been set up for talks on trade and investment, prompting his ministry to sent out a team of negotiators to carry out discussions in advance.
The team would also be taking with it a group of private businesses to seek out investment opportunities ahead of the official visit by the government in the middle of the year.
Secretary-General of the EEC Development Policy Committee Kanis Saengsuphan, meanwhile, said the meeting had agreed upon a special agreement to link investments between the Thai EEC and Henan, as well as cooperate on the developments of airports and ports.
He said if the agreement was proven to be a success, it would become the first agreement undertaken between EEC and an international organisation.
The Henan governor had expressed that Thailand has laid out a clear path for the development of the EEC, in which the premier is overseeing the project himself, while the clear promotion from the Board of Investment (BoI) would help attract Chinese investors to the project. (TNA)
