‘Iran’s greatest achievement ignored in human rights reports’

TEHRAN, Nov. 19 (MNA) – Mohammad Javad Larijani, the secretary general of the High Council for Human Rights, said that the greatest achievement of the Islamic Republic of Iran which is ‘Islamic democracy’ has been ignored in all the reports on the human rights situation in Iran. Larijani, who has travelled to New York with a delegation of human rights officials, made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states on Friday. He dismissed claims of human rights abuses in Iran as “unfounded”, adding, “Unfortunately, in these reports, which have been submitted to the United Nations as documents, it has been mentioned that Iran interrogates the people in secret and even hangs them. Such a claim is made while everyone knows that even the most minor indictments issued are sometimes reported in the media before officials are informed. Even one person has not been tried or punished in secret in Iran.” He also said that the Islamic Republic will not give in to the pressure exerted on it over claims of human rights abuses. Elsewhere in his remarks, Larijani called on the NAM member states not to allow such allegations to be leveled against a member state.
