British MotoGP Cancelled Due To Bad Weather, Unsafe Track Conditions

By Farhanah Azmi SILVERSTONE (United Kingdom), Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Heavy rain and unsafe track conditions have forced the cancellation of Sunday’s MotoGP race at the Silverstone Circuit. After a dry MotoGP warm-up, rain began to fall as the support classes were out and then got heavy just as the premier class went to the grid. A meeting between race organiser, Dorna, International Road-Racing Teams Association (IRTA) and the MotoGP riders, had taken place to decide the outcome. “We have decided earlier to delay the race but the condition was not improving even after the rain abated, the track were still too wet. Safety remains as our priority. “We also discussed various options including to have the race tomorrow (Monday), but it is not possible,” MotoGP Race Director Mike Webb told a press conference. The start of the British Grand Prix was delayed due to bad weather at the circuit. With heavy rain lashing down throughout the weekend, the race had already been brought forward from its original race start time of 1 pm to 11.30 am in a bid to beat the weather. However, the rain continued to pour, forcing officials to delay the start time for safety reasons. Meanwhile, national racer Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah from Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team said he had no choice but to accept the decision. “Technically, the Safety Commission has finalised the decision to cancel the race. “It is due to the unsafe track condition and bad weather. My qualifying session also has not gone well. For the next round, I need to improve traction and the technical aspects of the bike,” he said. -- BERNAMA
