Iran wrestling team wins Takhti Cup

TEHRAN,March 13(MNA) – The Iranian freestyle wrestling team claimed the title of Takhti Cup on Saturday. Iran scooped six gold medals and won the championship with 66 points. Russia finished in second place with 47 points followed by Kazakhstan (40), Georgia (27), Mongolia (18) and Iraq (2). The two-day Takhti Cup was held in Tehran’s Azadi Sports Complex. Wrestlers from Iran, Russia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Georgia took part in the competition. Gholamreza Takhti, who died in 1968, is the most famous wrestler in Iranian history. He won the gold medal in the Melbourne 1956 Olympic Games and won two silver medals in the Helsinki (1952) and Rome (1960) Olympic Games.
