Nafiizwan Advances To Qualifying Finals In British Open

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) – Two-time national champion Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan led the country’s charge to the qualifying finals in the 2018 British Open Squash Championships in Hull, England, on Sunday (early Monday Malaysian time). The 32-year-old moved to the next round after beating Jan Van Den Herrewegen of the Netherlands, winning 11-6, 11-3 and 11-6 in the first qualifying match of the tournament held at the Hull University Sports and Fitness Centre, according to the tournament website www.allambritishopen.com. The 2016 world junior champion, Ng Eain Yow, also cruised to the next round by edging Lyell Fuller of England 11-7, 11-8 and 11-1. Another national player, Ivan Yuen, however, was eliminated from the tournament after losing 8-11, 10-12 and 7-11 to Tsz Fung Yip of Hong Kong. In the women’s division, national top-ranked junior S. Sivasangari booked her spot in the qualifying finals by edging Lily Taylor of the host country 17-19, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-4. Malaysian squash queen and five-time British Open winner Nicol David decided to skip this year’s edition as she is still recovering from hamstring and adductor strains. -- BERNAMA
