Philippines Wins 7th ASEAN + 3 Junior Science Odyssey 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 4 (Bernama) -- The Philippines beat nine other countries to emerge the overall winner of the 7th ASEAN + 3 Junior Science Odyssey (7th APTJSO) 2018. The science camp competition also saw Malaysia announced as the first runner-up and South Korea secured the second runner-up. Speaking to Bernama, a representative of the Philippines team Jonyle Suriaga, 15, said they took a month to prepare for the competition and had undergone training with several schools teachers and professors. “We also went to the universities that have science equipments to get familiar with the equipments in the competitions. “We have learnt a lot from this science camp, it is an opportunity for us to become a better person and push ourselves beyond limits,” he said when met after the closing and prize giving ceremony here today. Deputy Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis presented the medals to the winners during the closing ceremony of the 7th APTJSO 2018 at the National Science Centre here, Friday. APTJSO is an annual science camp for students aged between 13 and 15 from ASEAN + 3 countries. The camp is designed to develop talents of young individuals and nurture them to become future scientists and innovators. Themed 'Science And Innovation for Good Health and Societal Well Being", the event was hosted by Kuala Lumpur for the first time since its inauguration in 2012. Nine countries participated in this year's competition including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, forming 19 teams that include 18 teachers and 57 students. -- BERNAMA
