Two Malaysian Men’s Pairs Cruise To Last Eight In Korea Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) — Two national men’s doubles pairs — Aaron Chia Teng Fong-Soh Wooi Yik and Chooi Kah Ming-Low Juan Shen continued their splendid performance by advancing to the quarter-finals in the Korea Open Badminton Tournament in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday. Chia-Soh defeated Huang Kaixiang-Wang Zekang of China; winning in 21-16 and 21-11 while Chooi-Low stunned seventh seeds, Liao Min Chun-Su Ching Heng of Taiwan; 21-19 and 21-16 in the second round held at SK Handball Stadium, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfworldtour.bwfbadminton.com. National women’s doubles pair, Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean also advanced to the last eight in the US$600,000 (RM2.482 million) tournament after fending off a strong challenge from Chang Ye Na-Jung Kyung Eun of South Korea; winning in 21-13, 18-21 and 21-14 in the second round. Another Malaysian pair, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun-Yap Cheng Wen, however, crashed out of the tournament after losing 19-21, 21-19 and 18-21 to Anggia Shitta Awanda-Ni Ketut Mahadewi Istarani of Indonesia in another second round tie. Malaysia’s interest in two other events— men’s singles and also the mixed doubles— fizzled out after the players were beaten by their respective opponents. The 2018 World Championships semi-finallist, Liew Daren lost in straight sets of 15-21 and 16-21 to the eighth seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia while Chen Tang Jie-Peck Yen Wei were beaten by the second seeds, Mathias Christiansen-Christinna Pedersen of Denmark; losing in 13-21 and 20-22.
