Police take into custody residents and activists who chained themselves to a vehicle in Gangjeong Village on the southern tip of South Korea's southernmost island of Jeju on March 7, 2012, as protesters hold a sit-in in an attempt to prevent an explosive firm from transporting explosives for blasting rocks to the construction site of a new naval base in the village. The project, which was launched in 2007 during the previous administration of the late President Roh Moo-hyun, has been one of the most contentious issues in South Korea recently as opposition parties, environmental groups and other activists staged strong protests against it.
