Ministry of Foreign Trade prepares for UAE's participation in seven international fairs in 2010

Abu Dhabi, Jan 17, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade (MoFT) is preparing for the UAE's inclusion in several international trade fairs throughout the year as part of efforts to strengthen the presence of UAE products and services in foreign markets, access new markets, and increase foreign investments in the UAE. MoFT also expects the exposure to these events to enhance awareness on national industries, boost export opportunities and create new business partnerships between the Emirates and the rest of the world.
Abdullah Ahmed Al Saleh, Director General of MoFT, says that the Ministry aims to benefit from the platforms and exhibitions available in the world markets, especially those organized by the UAE's trade partners. He adds that international trade events enable the Emirates' private sector and business community to establish commercial and investment partnerships with their foreign counterparts, thus stimulating the country's foreign trade.
Among the events Al Saleh has identified in MoFT's 2010 calendar are the "China Import and Export Fair," also known as the "Canton Fair," to be held in April; the "Privileges International Trade Show" running in Johannesburg, South Africa in May; Tunisia's "Safakes International Fair" in June; the "Kenya International Show" 1 scheduled in Nairobi, Kenya in June; and "Expo 2010 Shanghai China," which will run for six months starting early June. Other fairs slated for the latter part of the year include the "International Business Show for Industry and Trade," in Vienna, Austria in October; the "Malaysia International Trade Fair Show" in November; and the "Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Show" in December.
For her part, H.E. Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, will embark on a promotional tour across four Indian cities in February. She will promote UAE goods and products as well as investment opportunities in the country. Her trip will feature a promotional fair of traditional and heritage UAE industries.
Al Saleh notes that the Ministry has taken several factors into consideration while planning the UAE's participation in international exhibitions, such as the Emirates' geographic diversification strategy and the unique needs of the country's manufacturers and the private sector in general. He adds that MoFT adopts modern and professional methods to enhance the UAE's trade promotion activities and policies and coordinates closely with concerned authorities in the country.
The Director General further explains that MoFT focuses on opening global markets to UAE exports from the public and private sectors, which is a major thrust within the country's economic policy. He points out that initiatives undertaken by MoFT during the past year have strengthened the UAE's regional and global status as the Middle East's main trade gateway and one of the world's top trade partners. He added that MoFT's efforts have limited the impact of the global financial crisis on the UAE's foreign trade sector. Moreover, he noted that Ministry initiatives have helped the UAE gain impressive rankings in global trade surveys issued by prominent international institutions.
Last year, MoFT attracted global attention to the UAE by organizing pavilions in several specialized international events such as the "Malaysia International Trade Fair Show," where the UAE sent a large delegation of more than 71 organizations and companies under the leadership of H.E. Sheikha Lubna and resulted in the signing of 10 major business and investment agreements. The Ministry also led 30 organizations in the "Hong Kong Small and Medium Enterprises Show" and accompanied major UAE companies in a foreign investment projects exhibition held in Beijing, China. In addition, MoFT has organized several meetings and seminars within the UAE and participated in similar events throughout the world.
The UAE ranked well in various trade and economic surveys released by prominent international institutions in 2009. It placed 19th among the world's top 20 exporting countries according to the World Trade Organisation's 2008 Report, posting US$242 billion in exports to account for 1.5 per cent of the global figure. The country's exports grew 21 per cent between 2000 and 2008, while its imports rose 21 per cent within the same period to rank 27th globally with a value of US$166 billion.
