Lubna receives Canadian official

UAE Foreign Trade Minister HE Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi has underscored that the UAE prioritises the investment in renewable energy in line with its declared strategy to diversify the economic base and development of non oil sectors, which contributed over 63 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product in 2008.
Meeting the Honourable Ed Stelmach, Premier of the Province of Alberta of Canada here at the ministry, the UAE minister added that the UAE managed over the years to reduce contribution of the oil sector through increasing contribution of the non oil sectors to the GDP- a move which significantly bolstered the national economy. She added that the renewable energy sector is the most important sector, which plays vital role in boosting the UAE economic diversification efforts.
"The UAE owns world class projects in the field of renewable energy despite the fact that it is one of the top world oil producers", Lubna said.
She pointed out that the UAE was keen to boost the trade and investment cooperation with Canada through enhancement of the expertise and information exchange mechanism, urging the Canadian side to import the UAE products such as aluminium, ceramic, yuri and others, which are competitive and with high quality. The UAE official also invited the Canadian Companies to further boost the trade with the UAE.
On his part, the Canadian official stressed the need for more contacts between the two countries to further explore the best opportunities for cooperation and encouragement of the private sector to boost the trade and investment ties between Canada with the region and Asia. He lauded the UAE efforts to boost the renewal energy sector, stressing interest of Canada in general and Alberta province in particular to bolster the investment cooperation with the UAE in the field of renewable energy.
The non oil trade exchange between the UAE and Canada surged remarkably in 2008, up by 118 per cent to US$1.5 billion, compared to 2007. The UAE non oil exports to Canada stood at US$519 million, ranking Canada in the 29th in the UAE foreign trade list.
