Khalifa Foundation dispatches 200 tonnes of assistance to Haiti
Santo Domingo - Feb 8, 2010 (WAM)- The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation sent yesterday a convoy of humanitarian assistance as part of its aid programme targeting quake victims in Haiti.
A Foundation press release said the 7 truck convoy, which carries 200 tonnes of relief, food and medical supplies, is part of the second phase of the Foundation's relief programme instructed by UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The UAE president ordered delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance to quake-effected population in Haiti in coordination with the Government of Dominican.
The release added that about 500 tonnes of urgent and basic relief materials, which have been directly purchased from local market in the Dominican, will be transported to Haiti by land.
The convoy of aid has been prepared following a field visit paid by the Foundation delegation to Haiti where they were updated on the essential needs from food and medical supplies.
The Foundation indicated that its move to secure humanitarian assistance from the Dominican local market followed a series of meetings and discussions with UN specialised agencies, diplomatic missions and other humanitarian and relief organisations. They all stressed the urgency of delivering urgent humanitarian assistance from the nearest point to Haiti.
The Foundation affirmed that its relief programme in Haiti is in implementation of its humanitarian message in the international scene and comes as part of its care to ease and improve the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Haiti. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
