UAE takes part in the 41st sessions of the UN Statistical Commission

New York - Feb 25, 2010 (WAM)- The UAE is taking part in the 41st session of the Statistical Commission, which is being held at United Nations Headquarters, New York from 23 to 26 February 2010. The UAE is represented in the sessions by HE Rashid Khamis Al Suwaidi, Director General of National Statistics Centre.
Al Suwaidi said in a statement that the meeting is an annual forum for the statistical authorities of 150 countries, as well as competent international organisations, such as World Bank, International Monetary Fund, International Labour Organisation and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). He added that the meeting will discuss main statistical issues and how to update the statistical work.
The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, is the apex entity of the global statistical system. It brings together the Chief Statisticians from member states from around the world. It is the highest decision making body for international statistical activities especially the setting of statistical standards, the development of concepts and methods and their implementation at the national and international level.
The Statistical Commission oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and is a Functional Commission of the UN Economic and Social Council.
