UAE-US sign further MoU Concerning Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy
Abu Dhabi, Feb 25, 2010 (WAM)- UAE Minister of State for Foreign affairs, H.E. Dr. Anwar Gargash, and the US Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, signed an implementation arrangement between UAE Foreign Ministry and US Department of Energy concerning information exchange and cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy on February 24, 2009 in Abu Dhabi.
The Implementing arrangement establishes a framework via which US Department of Energy through its National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) would cooperate and support UAE competent authorities involved in the development of peaceful nuclear energy sector.
Commenting on the signing, the UAE Minister Gargash remarked that "the arrangement is a further framework for cooperation between the two Governments in the peaceful nuclear energy field, it is an excellent platform for the UAE entities to benefit from the technical competence and expertise possessed by the Department Of Energy in the area of nuclear energy." The arrangement allows for the exchange of technical information, training of personnel, access to DOE technical laboratories, conduction of workshops and other joint cooperation activities to assist UAE entities in their development of the required infrastructure and human resources for the nuclear energy sector.
"This Arrangement is part of the Obama Administration's commitment to ensuring peaceful nuclear power is an important part of the global energy mix," said Sec. Chu. "We welcome this collaboration with the UAE to reduce carbon pollution through the development of clean sources of energy." The UAE has recently awarded a contract to a consortium of Korean companies to build the first four nuclear power reactors. The Government has been active in developing the required infrastructure for the peaceful nuclear energy program since the publishing of the "UAE Policy on the Evaluation and Implementation of Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program" in 2008.
The policy is based on principles of complete operational transparency and the commitment to highest standards of safety, security and non-proliferation. Additionally the UAE policy calls for close and continuous coordination with the IAEA, as well as cooperation with the Governments and firms of responsible nuclear supplier nations. The UAE has concluded multiple bilateral cooperation agreements for cooperation in the development of peaceful uses of nuclear energy including a recent cooperation agreement with US Government.
HE Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Special Representative for International Nuclear Cooperation, Foreign Ministry, Dr. Abdul Rahim Al Awadi, Assistant Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs and International Organisations and US Ambassador to UAE Richard G. Olson, attended the signing ceremony.
