UAE guarantees constitutional rights of woman: UNDP expert

Abu Dhabi, Mar 9, 2010 (WAM)- Since its inception, the UAE leadership has been conscious about the role the woman can play as a key and equal partner to man in the nation-building and that her empowerment is one of the most important factors of success of development strategy, a UN expert said today.
Mr. Elballa Hagona, acting UNDP Resident Representative in the UAE, told the '12th Global Businesswomen '&' Leaders Summit - WOIBEX 2010' at the Burj Al Arab, Dubai, that engagement of woman at the leadership and decision-making levels is a continuation of the empowerment drive led by HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the UAE General Women's Union, since 1975.
He said the UAE has passed a set of legislations that guarantee constitutional rights of woman and her equality with man in different fields including the equality in rights and duties, ownership, employment, social security, business, education, and health care.
He indicated that woman is accounting for 22.4 per cent of the manpower in the country and occupying 66 per cent of workforce in the public sector with 30 per cent of them in the senior leadership and decision-making positions.
