Sharjah heritage show attracts thousands in Berlin
Berlin - March 14 2010 (WAM)- Thousands of visitors, officials and German media representatives have been flocking to the Sharjah suite at the International Tourism Bourse (ITB), which opened in Berlin, Germany, on Wednesday, to view the various activities that reflect the heritage and history of Sharjah. The emirate is participating in the event for the 13th time. The event will run until Sunday according to a report in "Gulf News".
The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) has focused its participation in this year's edition on showcasing the traditions and folklore of the UAE, believing that this focus will attract visitors and inform them about the legacy of the UAE in general and Sharjah in particular.
Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmad Al Qasimi, SCTDA Chairman, talked about the importance of these activities, saying: "Shedding light on traditional customs of the UAE, such as henna drawings, Arabic hospitality and traditional costumes dating back 5,000 years, is our focus, and we wish to promote these traditions to the world.
"Heritage is one of the distinct characteristics of Sharjah, and the emirate is well-known for its cultural and traditional creative arts.
"As such, we are working on promoting these characteristics through our external participation to get everyone familiar with the unique lifestyle of Arabs and Islamic culture.
"And although Sharjah is developing and modernising, it has maintained its traditional legacy and adhered to the norms and customs of its people who seek modern lifestyles, but who also believe that maintaining traditions and heritage is essential to building a sound culture.
"The people of Sharjah are known for their traditional customs stemming from Islamic teachings and goodwill, and that is what attracts tourists to the emirate today," he added.
