UAE participates in international donor conference to help Sudan
Cairo - March 22, 2010 (WAM)- UAE participated yesterday in an international donor conference for the development and reconstruction of Darfur, which was held in Cairo under the joint chairmanship of Egypt and Turkey in cooperation with the Organisation of the Islamic Conference to support Sudan.
UAE was represented in the conference by HE Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Acting Director General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development.
The opening session was attended by Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit, Secretary General of the Arab League Amr Moussa, Secretary General of the Organisation of Islamic Conference Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmad Daoud Oglu and Mina Arko Minawi, a top aide to Sudanese President.
Al Suwaidi said that the conference is very important, particularly as it aims to address the challenges facing Sudan in the field of development, particularly in Darfur.
In a statement given to Emirates News Agency (WAM) in Cairo Al Suwaidi added that the UAE is a strategic partner to the Government of Sudan over the past years, and that the Fund has given financial aid to Sudanese government exceeding USD 1.7one billion over the last thirty years.
Al Suwaidi said: "As we were partners in the past we will also be partners in the future with Sudan to bring development, stability and security and create employment opportunities in the Sudan providing a decent life for citizens".
