Department of Municipal Affairs to make Earth Hour year long

Abu Dhabi, Mar 25, 2010 - The Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA) will be participating in the World Earth Hour, taking place globally on Saturday, March 27 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Earth Hour Day, a global event organised by World Wildlife Fund (WWF) asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change.
Through the Abu Dhabi Building Codes, the DMA is committed to making a one day event sustainable over 365 days as part of its efforts to save energy.
The codes, to be launched soon, are part of DMA's vision of an efficient municipal framework providing a better quality of life across the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The DMA is committed to delivering services that drive awareness on the critical environmental issue of energy consumption, and by making energy conservation and efficiency a way of life in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
"Events such as Earth Hour are a great example how people can be made aware of their impact on the environment and how easy it is to reduce the negative effects. That aim is reflected in our new building codes which will help people living in Abu Dhabi reduce energy costs as well as giving them buildings that last longer and therefore demand few resources" said Nasir Aljesmi, Director of PR and Communications, Department of Municipal Affairs.
