UAE banks' ATM transactions rise 7%
Dubai, April 5, 2010 (WAM)- UAE banks witnessed seven per cent growth in transactions at the automated teller machines (ATMs) in 2009, according to the Central Bank's latest data according to a report in "Emirates Business."
The number of ATMs rose by 48 per cent to 3,599 as on December 31, 2009 against 2,420 in the previous year. Accordingly, the total number of ATM transactions went up by seven per cent to 62.58 million, compared to 58.37 million in 2008.
The total value of transactions increased by about seven per cent to Dh67.97 billion in 2009, compared to Dh63.74bn during 2008.
The total number of bank transactions also went up by seven per cent to 146.94 million during 2009 compared to 137.1 million during the previous year.
However, the value of bank transactions saw a marginal decline to Dh144.08bn in 2009 compared to Dh144.33bn in 2008.
With this, the total number of combined transactions by UAE banks witnessed seven per cent increase to 209.536 million during 2009 from 195.482 million in December 2008. The total amount of transactions by UAE banks recorded a two per cent increase to Dh212.05bn during 2009 compared to Dh208.07bn in 2008.
Interestingly, the point of sale transactions declined by around 12 per cent to 3.043 million during 2009 compared to 3.453 million in 2008. The value of point of sale transactions fell by more than 25 per cent to Dh1.242bn during 2009 compared to Dh1.673bn in the previous year.
The largest number of ATMs were added by Emirates NBD at 365 following the merger of the two banks, taking its total number of ATMs to 655 as on December 31, 2009, the highest in the region.
