World deserves to grow as UAE has: Bill Clinton
Dubai, April 11, 2010 (WAM) Former US president Bill Clinton, now the United Nations representative in Haiti, finds his new role in public service a pleasant switch.
Addressing a gathering at the GEMS World Academy here on Friday, he urged the youth to participate in non-governmental activities to reduce inequality, instability and unsustainability in the world. “Every country needs to be able to stand on its feet and grow as Dubai and the UAE have grown,” he said in a report published by "Khaleej Times."
Clinton was here at the invitation of education provider GEMS, which announced a strategic partnership with the Clinton Global Foundation, a non-profit philanthropic organisation. Students of the Dubai American Academy also presented Clinton with a Dh100,000 cheque for the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund at the event.
“The UAE has embraced the modern world and is not threatened by the changes,” he said. He described the UAE as a country that preserved its heritage, values and faith and yet welcome people from all over the world who thinks, worship and live differently.
CGI was founded in 2005 to active people into finding solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.
Clinton said many parts of the world still reeled under severe political and economic turmoil and stressed the need to embrace the entire global population.
“When I was in politics, my wife never ran for anything and said she would be a terrible politician,” he said. “She spent her time with non-government organisations as a private citizen. Now she has all the power and influence and I’m a private citizen doing public good... and I’m enjoying the switch.”
He continued: “As private citizens, to do public good is important, because in the global society of the 21stcentury there will always be a gap between what the private sector will produce and what the public sector can provide. And it is in this gap that the non-governmental work of the world takes place.”
Clinton encouraged the youth to find solutions. “When an issues arises the three questions asked are what is the problem, who is responsible and how much will it cost?” he said.
“But the fourth question, and that is the one that NGO’s focus on is, how do you propose to make a positive change?”
According to him, the responsibility of action is a collaborative effort between the government, private and non-governmental entities. “The need is to build up on the positives and reduce the negative forces of interdependence.”
“One must ask, what is my responsibility towards being a global citizen?”
