Nahyan bin Mubarak signs a memorandum of understanding with Durham University
Abu Dhabi,April 12, 2010 (WAM)- His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mubarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, President of Zayed University, and Professor Christopher F. Higgins Vice-Chancellor and Warden University of Durham, signed yesterday a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a period of 3 years, to promote joint relations and cultural, educational and scientific cooperation, in addition to collaboration in the fields of teaching and joint research activities and the exchange of scholars, faculty members, postgraduate and undergraduate student delegations.
The signing ceremony was held in His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan's palace in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim Vice President of Zayed University, Dr. Daniel Johnson Provost of Zayed University, Dr. Jeffrey Belnap Associate Provost, and several officials.
During the signing ceremony, His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan Mubarak Al Nahayan commended the new partnership with the University of Durham which is one the most prestigious universities in the UK.
According to the MOU, Sheikh Nahyan said both universities will work on specific partnership projects in several fields, which include organising a joint Durham- Zayed conference on aspects of international law, in addition to establishing a Durham-Zayed Research Facility at Zayed University's Abu Dhabi campus to allow a focus for joint research activities for staff and students of both universities, as well as collaboration in the areas of Archaeology, Artefact Studies, the Conservation of Archaeological and Museum Objects, research in anthropology, sustainability and development of Energy studies.
He explained that Zayed University and the University of Durham will also collaborate in research on the area of the structure and functioning of health service provision in the UAE, in addition to the possibility of delivering short executive courses in Islamic Finance in Zayed University.
Commenting on the new partnership between the two universities, Professor Christopher F. Higgins Vice-Chancellor and Warden University of Durham said: "We are very excited about this new collaboration with Zayed University, and we expect amazing results of this fruitful cooperation, particularly in the field of sustainable energy studies and archaeology, and the exchange of faculty members and students".
He asserted that the University of Durham as one of the top three multidisciplinary universities in the UK, is constantly working on many scientific research projects in the fields of finance, international affairs, and politics. He added: "Many of our researchers are continuously coming to the UAE for the completion of their research, and they will benefit a lot from the collaboration between University of Durham and Zayed University especially with the plan to establish a Durham - Zayed Research Facility on ZU's campus in Abu Dhabi".
On his part, Dr. Sulaiman Al Jassim, Vice President of Zayed University stressed the university's keenness to strengthen areas of cooperation in science and academia with various universities and higher education institutes around the world, in addition to providing the highest professional levels and standards of curricula and programmes in all colleges and departments of the University, so that they supersede their counterparts in prestigious universities around the world, as well as meet the needs of the labour market, which contributes to the economic and social development of the UAE. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
