Sharjah allocates Dh5bn for projects in 2009-2010

Sharjah, April 19, 2010 (WAM)- The Government of Sharjah has allocated Dh5 billion for infrastructure projects in 2009-2010, including main and internal roads, bridges and tunnels, and Dh500 million for the maintenance of housing projects built for UAE nationals, said the top official of Sharjah Public Works Department (SPWD)according to 'Emirates Business' report.
Sheikh Khalid bin Saqr bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Director-General of the SPWD and a member of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), said the total cost of roads and housing projects for UAE nationals that have been built in 2009 and are currently under construction is about Dh2.25bn.
He was answering several question put to him by SEC members yesterday.
Sheikh Khalid said about 13 pedestrian crossings, including bridges, subways and humps, have been approved. The department has completed a pedestrian bridge at Sahara Centre and other pedestrian crossings will be constructed on major roads, including Emirates Road and Al Wahda and Wasit streets.
An allocation of Dh100m was made for maintenance of internal streets, he added.
The 1.8km bridge project along Al Wahda Street is in the final phase of construction and includes developing the intersection underneath the bridge. "The project will open to traffic within a couple of months. After that we will start maintenance works in the branch streets of Al Wahda," he added.
The department is expanding the 10.8km Al Badee road into four lanes, two in each direction, stretching from the University City Bridge to the Al Sajaa-Al Khawaneej intersection, Sheikh Khalid said.
Regarding housing projects for UAE national families, he said the department has constructed 3,819 units during the period 2000-2009.
When asked whether the designs of these houses could be modified to suit individual families, he said the designs had incorporated suggestions made by the families. The designs have been submitted to the Ruler of Sharjah for approval, he said.
The government has allocated Dh500m for the maintenance of housing projects for UAE nationals and the department has submitted a proposal to the SEC to offer 1,000 housing grants annually, which is subject to approval of the Ruler of Sharjah. Roads needed at the new residential area in Meleiha have been studied in co-ordination with the municipal council, Sheikh Khalid said. Construction work on the road projects approved by the government will be started once the budget has been passed, he said while answering a question by Abdullah Salem Al Khasooni.
The department has also finished designing the Ring Road in Dibba Al Hosn project in co-ordination with experts and the project will be started very soon, he said while answering a query by Abdullah Ali Al Madroob.
The SPWD would remind the Federal Electricity and Water Authority, which is the supplier of water and electricity to Al Dhaid, to expedite electricity connections to buildings that have been finished, said Sheikh Khalid while answering a query by Jamila Mohammed Salem Al Adab.
The department will also soon introduce evening training programmes to ensure more employees join training workshops, added Sheikh Khalid.
