UAE Vice President issues ordinance regulating private institutions for the rehabilitation of the disabled

Dubai, April 20, 2010 (WAM)- Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued an ordinance on the regulation of non-governmental institutions for the care and rehabilitation of the disabled persons.
The ordinance aims to regulate private sector services provided to this category, contributing to the development of overall services for disabled persons and their effective integration into society, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force in the country. The institutions will come under the control by the Ministry of Social Affairs.
The ordinance also defined the areas and goals to be achieved by the non-governmental institutions working in the field of giving care and rehabilitation of disabled persons including the provision of curative services as well as social and psychological rehabilitation, in addition to providing support services such as nursing, physiotherapy and speech therapy.
The ordinance entrusted the Ministry of Social Affairs with the licensing of non-governmental institutions provided they meet the standards and criteria set by the ministry.
The ordinance also specified the duties of non-governmental institutions specialising in the care and rehabilitation of the disabled persons to provide a detailed outline of their curricula, as well as plans and programs of rehabilitation. This should be presented to the Ministry of Social Affairs along with periodic reports about their functioning and activities, which should conform to the Arab and Islamic values and traditions.
