Sharjah Ruler receives honorary doctorate from Japan's Kanazawa University

Kanazawa - April 25, 2010 (WAM)- Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has received an honorary doctorate from Kanazawa University in recognition of his outstanding support to culture, arts in the UAE and the emirate of Sharjah as well as to building bridges among the world's different cultures.
The honorary degree also recognizes Sheikh Sultan as one of the most prominent Arab figures who lends support to efforts to boost intercultural dialogue to maintain an open and respectful exchange between the different cultural backgrounds or world views as well as to develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and practices, foster equality and enhance human creative processes
In a speech at the awarding ceremony here, Sheikh Sultan called for cooperation and teamwork to eliminate prejudice, fanaticism and intolerance from all communities around the world in order to further boost the process of intercultural dialogue
He further expressed strong conviction in education and scientific research as a cornerstone for human economic, cultural and social progress
He cited the American University in Sharjah and the University of Sharjah as two leading institutions that drive the process with 16000 male and female graduates from 85 countries who are now contributing to the growth of their communities around the world
He also noted that Sharjah is planning innovation and advanced technology pools to further advance exchange with foreign academic institutions and research centres
He noted that Sharjah, 20 years ago, started a huge cultural project to promote knowledge and thought among the young generations to enable them to actively engage in community development and growth in a world of knowledge-based economies
For his part, Nakamura Shin-ichi, President of Kanazawa University expressed gladness at the awarding of the degree to Sheikh Sultan. He further thanked him for his contributions.
Nakamura said he was looking forward to expanded friendship between the peoples of the UAE and Japan
The roots of Kanazawa University can be traced to 1862 when the Kaga Domain established Hikoso Vaccination Centre. Ishikawa Normal School, Kanazawa Higher Normal School, Ishikawa Youth Normal School, Kanazawa Medical School, Kanazawa Technical College, and the Fourth Higher School were integrated in May 1949 to form Kanazawa University. Since then, for over 50 years, Kanazawa University has been the leader of universities on the Sea of Japan. It has continuously and substantially contributed to the development of higher education in Japan as well as global promotion of research by offering various undergraduate and graduate courses.
