UAE Ministry of Interior sets up Anti-Human Trafficking Panel

Abu Dhabi, April 28, 2010 (WAM)- The Ministry of Interior has set up the Anti-Human Trafficking Panel to coordinate with the competent authorities, care for victims and update the legislatives in this respect, according to Brig. Ahmed Mohammed Nakhaira Al Muharrami, Director of Human Rights Department in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.
The panel will update the legislative regarding human trafficking crimes at the internal and external levels. It will also coordinate with the competent authorities to launch awareness over the human trafficking crimes. The panel will coordinate with the centres sheltering the victims to ensure they are more protected. It will also prepare plans and follow up their implementation.
Nakhaira said the new future plans would further activate work in the field of human rights through programmes, training sessions, symposiums, conferences and field visits, adding that work is underway to set up modern database on human rights issues in coordination and cooperation with the competent authorities in the UAE and abroad. He indicated that the panel will monitor the regional and international development human rights issues to build human rights strategies.
Nakhaira commended the visit paid to the UAE by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, as part of her regional tour, adding that her impressions were positive about the UAE. He cited that she valued the efforts of the Interior ministry in the field of human rights.
He said in a statement about the visit of international human rights official that the UAE cares much about human rights, dignity and basic rights in line with Islamic teachings and the UAE constitution, indicating that the UAE leadership adopted measures to ensure the rights and freedoms.
Nakhairi said the human rights department which was set up upon the instructions of Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, was tasked with many human rights assignments, among others, dissemination of human rights culture in the ministry and to communicate with the public institutions, civil societies, and monitor human rights reports.
