Mohammed bin Rashid opens SportAccord Convention 2010

Dubai, April 28, 2010 (WAM)- Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum yesterday opened the 8th edition of SportAccord Convention in a ceremony at the Atlantis Palm Hotel, Dubai.
This is the first time the event is held in an Arab country. The convention will be running up to April 30th.
Present at the ceremony were H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and a 1500-strong elite local, Arab and international sports figures including HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussain, Wife of H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, H.H Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, President of Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman and CEO, Emirates Group, H.H Sheikh Ahmed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Chairman of the UAE National Olympic Committee, H.H Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, H.H Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al-Nahyan, Chairman of the Emirates Equestrian Federation, H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, Sheikh Marwan Bin Rashid Al-Mualla, H.E Abdul Rehman Al-Owais, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development and Chairman of Emirates Motor Sports Federation, Hein Verbruggen, Chairman of SportAccord Convention, Jacques Rogge , President of the International Olympic Committee, or IOC, and a host of influential sports figures.
Princess Haya, in the welcome address, described Dubai as "the bridge between the ancient and the modern and the link between the old and the new".
She urged "the global family of sport" for using sports as a way to bridging the gaps among cultures of the world.
Rogge, in his speech, at the opening ceremony described SportAccord as a vital link to athletes worldwide and we look forward to a productive week of discussions and debates here.
Verbruggen commended Dubai and the UAE for their efforts to organise the international event which he expressed hopes that it would serve international peace and the prosperity of peoples of the world. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
