UAE participates in the Shanghai Expo 2010

Shanghai - may 2, 2010 (WAM)- UAE ambassador to China HE Omar Ahmed Al Bitar, yesterday morning the UAE pavilion at Expo Shanghai 2010. The pavilion is organised and supervised by the National Media Council (NMC).
The opening ceremony was attended by Salem Saeed Al Ameri, Deputy Director General of MNC and Commissioner-General of the UAE pavilion, Deputy Commissioner-General Abdulla Al Aidaroos and a number of senior officials.
The UAE delegation, the presence of the Ambassador, had attended last night the opening ceremony Shanghai International Expo 2010, which was declared open by Chinese President in the presence of a large number of Heads of States and Governments and ministers.
Chinese President Hu Jintao declared the opening of the World Expo 2010 after years of planning and preparation at the Expo Culture Centre of the Expo site.
The Shanghai World Expo got underway yesterday evening with a dazzling display of artistic performances, fancy fireworks and high technologies at the opening ceremony.
International dignitaries, including Presidents of France, Palestine, South Korea, Turkmenistan, Armenia and Congo and European Commission President and other 16 heads of state and government were in attendance at the opening ceremony of the world event which attracts 242 countries.
Organisers hoped the six month long Shanghai World Expo, carrying the theme of "Better City, Better Life", would contribute to a social awakening so that cities may become more sustainable, fairer, safer and more harmonious.
The Expo is expected to attract 70 million visitors from China and abroad. The Expo site covers an area of 528 hectares along both sides of the Huangpu River, a tributary of the Yangtze River.
They said China offered 100 million dollars in support of developing countries to book and build their national pavilions.
The United Arab Emirates will have an impressive national presence at Expo 2010 Shanghai China. Occupying an area of 6000 square metres in the heart of the Expo site, the spectacular UAE pavilion, designed by world-famous architectural team, Foster + Partners, will showcase the prosperity, harmony, culture and innovativeness of the UAE to the world.
The UAE pavilion is located in the eastern section of the Expo site, south of the river and within easy reach of the Chinese pavilion on the opposite side of the main thoroughfare.
After several years of planning and development, the UAE Pavilion opened right on time on 1 May, welcoming the people of China and the world to a unique exhibition housed within a glittering building whose design is a creative interpretation of sand dunes, designed by Foster + Partners. Amid all the glitz and glamour of the Chinese celebrations, and following a truly spectacular evening of fireworks, sound and light that seemed to engulf the whole city and take over the whole sky, the UAE's opening was a relatively quiet affair.
"This is a great day for China, and a great day for the UAE", stated the UAE's Ambassador to China, Omer Al Bittar, "The United Arab Emirates is proud to bring a small part of our country to China in the shape of these elegant sand-dunes. We are also very happy to welcome all our visitors to hear our story. It is one for which the theme of Expo 2010, ‘Better City Better Life' could hardly be more apt. Thanks to the vision and wisdom of our leaders and the Government of the UAE the country has grown from very humble beginnings to become a world centre of innovation, development and creativity.
The dunes that we have chosen to represent the UAE remind us where we have come from and their glittering undulations also celebrate what we have achieved and where we are heading. The UAE is particularly happy to participate in EXPO 2010 and we thank the organisers and BIE for this wonderful opportunity to showcase the Emirates in China and to participate in the vigorous forum on what is required to improve the lives of city dwellers. We are keen to share our experiences with others and to learn from the 189 countries that are participating in this global event." The UAE's Commissioner General, Mr Salem Al Ameri, thanked the Ambassador for his words of encouragement and reiterated the UAE's excitement and anticipation of participating in such a large Expo event. "We have a great story to tell," he told the gathering, "We look forward to welcoming you all, not just to the Pavilion, but also to our website (www.uaepavilion.com) and to the Emirates themselves.
The pavilion (Dunes), he added, has a built-up area of 3452 square metres and has three main display booths, an information centre, a business centre and other facilities occupying 3900 square metres.
