Abbas opens new Palestinian embassy building in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, May 3, 2010 (WAM)- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has opened the new building of the Palestinian Embassy in the Embassies District, Abu Dhabi. The ceremony started with unveiling a plaque to commemorate the building completion then hoisting the Palestinian flag. The national anthems of Palestine and UAE were then played on the venue.
Present at the opening ceremony were H.E Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, Sheikh Shakhbout Bin Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, Ambassador Tareq Al-Haidan, Assistant Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, Dr. Khairi Al-Areedi, Ambassador of Palestine to the UAE, members of the diplomatic missions of Arab and other countries and members of the Palestinian diplomatic mission in Abu Dhabi.
Sheikh Nahyan, in a speech at the ceremony, expressed the UAE's pride in having the Palestinian flag on this historic day, stressing that UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, provides unwavering support to the Palestinian cause, which is "the first and most important issue for Arabs and the whole humanity since it affects the international security, human rights and the protection of freedom and independence of peoples of the world." This, he added, symbolises constant work and double efforts towards gaining rights and independence, adding that he looks forward to the day when hopes that the Palestinian flag waves in all Palestinian territories.
"This is a much cherished occasion on which all Palestinians and Arabs feel that the voice of Palestine will always resonate worldwide alongside other voices of justice, love and peace to hold the international community responsible for deciding the rights and putting an end to the aggression and occupation," Sheikh Nahyan said.
"It also truly embodies the struggle of this peaceful people for their raped rights to collective self-determination, return to their homes as well as to the establishment on an independent state on their lands," he added.
For his part, President Mahmoud Abbas, in a speech, expressed thanks for President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his unwavering humanitarian, material and political support to the Palestinian people and the Palestinian community in the UAE.
He further hailed the UAE-Palestinian relations which could serve as a model for relations among brothers."
Speaking on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), Abbas said "we have been suffering from inter-Palestinian divide for 2.5 years now... This still keeps brother in Gaza and the West Bank apart." Abbas stressed the need for "our maximum efforts to restore Palestinian national and territorial unity and bury the hatchet and put all the differences behind our backs in order to protect the interests and the future of our own people." Abbas expressed hope that Hamas would sign a reconciliation agreement produces upon Egyptian-brokered talks between the two Palestinian factions "so that we can collectively negotiate with others." "This divide makes usable to restore our rights and build our independent state, with Jerusalem as its capital.... We have to press ahead towards national Palestinian unity as the only way out and should achieve this at any cost in order to withdraw a pretext used by Israeli who would always ask which party they are talking with !," Abbas added.
