Ministry of Economy releases 2009 report on industry, investments
Abu Dhabi, May 5, 2010 (WAM)-The number of industrial plants in the UAE reached 4644 with a total capital of Dh81,165 million on December 31st, 2009, compared to 4219 plants with a total capital of Dh77,45 billion in 2008, according to a recent report released by the Ministry of Economy.
The "Industrial Plants, Investments and Workers in 2009" breaks down the figure as follows: food, beverages and tobacco 379 plants, textiles and readymade garments 282, wood ware and furniture 615, paper, printing and publishing 362, chemical industries 810, non-metallic mineral products 616, machines, equipment and metallic industries 1315 plants.
Geographically, the plants are distributed as follows: 346 plants in Abu Dhabi (with total capital of Dh41.9 billion), 1875 plants in Dubai (Dh19.7 billion), 1340 in Sharjah (Dh4.8 billion), 860 in Ajman (Dh1.5 billion), 186 in Ras Al-Khaimah (Dh5.3 billion), 162 in Umm Al-Qaiwain (Dh595 million) and 73 plants in Fujairah (Dh7.1 billion).
Minister of Economy Sultan Saeed Al-Mansouri commented: "Despite the hard global economic situation last year, 425 new plants were constructed throughout the UAE.. The increase reflects the successful efforts by the federal government and local governments to drive industrial development."
