NMC, AUD-MBRSC sign MOU

Abu Dhabi, May 6, 2010 (WAM)- In an effort to increase and improve coordination between media outlets and universities and to create proper training programs for journalists and broadcasters, the UAE National Media Council (NMC) and the American University in Dubai on behalf of The Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication (AUD MBRSC) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the NMC headquarters in Abu Dhabi.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Ibrahim Al Abed, Director General of NMC, and Mr. Ali Jaber, Dean of the AUD-MBRSC, in presence of Ahmed Ali Al Bloushi, CEO of Emirates Media and Chairperson of the NMC's Emiratisation Committee; Habib Al Sayegh, Advisor of Editorial Affairs at Al Khaleej Publishing House and Ali Amer Al Meshraji, Executive Director of Emirates News Agency (WAM) and External Information.
The agreement officially seals the commitment of both parties to advance higher education in the Middle East, improve journalism and communication skills, reinforce local talent and empower local media practitioners.
It focuses on cooperation in the field of media training for UAE Nationals on two levels: full time education and mid-career training.
As such MBRSC will design and tailor make vocational training sessions to NMC candidates including national media executives wishing to update their knowledge and media know how.
NMC will also assist in identifying students to benefit from MBRSC's scholarship to earn a Bachelor Degree in Communication and Information Studies at AUD.
AUD MBRSC and NMC will hold conferences hosting prominent media experts from around the world to lecture on strategic communications and modern techniques in public diplomacy and government communication to government media executives. Regular meetings will be held between both parties to explore fresh avenues of cooperation to continuously enhance the effectiveness of media and strategic communication in the UAE.
Commenting on this agreement, Ali Jaber said: "It is at the heart of the mission of the Mohammed Bin Rashid School for Communication at AUD to sign such an agreement with the Regulatory Body of the UAE Media. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai has envisioned a role for our School that transcends its education purpose to providing expert opinion on various media issues; the agreement with NMC is a platform to present such issues. In addition, MBRSC believes in continuous communication between educators and practitioners so as to keep abreast of the developments that are changing the industry. MBRSC strives to graduate students with up-to-date skills and information that will help manage and lead the change that is shaping the media today".
For his part, Mr Ibrahim Al Abed welcomed the signing of this agreement, hoping that it will provide opportunities to train the national cadres, help develop their skills in the media sector and reinforce the Emiratisation process in this sector.
Ahmed Al Bloushi emphasised the NMC's keenness to boost emiratisation in the media sector as per the directives of H.E. Saqr Ghobash, Minister of Labour, Chairman of the NMC.
"The Emiratisation Committee will follow up this MoU along with the other one that has been signed with Emirates Academy of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI), Abu Dhabi Media Zone Authority Twofour 54, and Thomson Reuters Foundation," Al Bloushi noted.
The NMC has recently decided to set up a national committee to follow up the Council's plans and initiatives for emiratisation in the media sector in the UAE.
