Abu Dhabi Police returns antiquities looted from Halat Al Bahrani Island
Abu Dhabi, May 9, 2010 (WAM)- Abu Dhabi Police has recovered rare antiquities and ancient coins dating back to different eras. The antiquities were thought to have been excavated illegally from Halat Al Bahrani Island 20 years ago.
According to Colonel Hammad Ahmed Al Hammadi, Director of Criminal Investigation Department at Abu Dhabi Police, the antiquities, including 33 UAE and Arab coins minted in different ancient times, were held by a Syrian investor for 20 years after being unearthed illegally from Halat Al Bahrani Island by a Syrian-born Swedish friend who worked on a rig there. He said that the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture '&' Heritage (ADACH) was notified by the UAE embassy in Stockholm about investigations there about stolen rare Emirati antiquities.
"According to archaeologists, the recovered antiquities are seen as a national treasure that should be returned home," Al Hammadi said. The Swedish man lodged a complaint against his Syrian friend after the latter told him that his precious treasure was lost. Abu Dhabi Police then arrested the Syrian investor who admitted possession of the antiquities. Located just two miles off Abu Dhabi, Halat Al Bahrain is 2-kilometer off Abu Dhabi. Its shallow water is home to herds of dugongs, coral reefs and seaweeds.
