Arab Media Forum 2010 opens in presence of Mohammed bin Rashid

Dubai, May 13, 2010 (WAM)- Arab Media Forum 2010 yesterday opened in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, also attended the inauguration of the 9th edition of the forum. Themed ‘Shifting Mediascape: Inspiring Content Expanding Reach', the two-day Arab Media Forum 2010 at The Atlantis-Palm has gathered high-ranking government officials as well as more than 2,000 media personalities and specialists from Arab countries and across the world.
In an informal discussion with the press, Sheikh Mohammed said the Gulf Cooperation Council was one of the few remaining Arab bloc that bring together countries with strong bonds of geography, history, language, faith and traditions. Sheikh Mohammed said the GCC consultative summit which he attended yesterday was 'necessary' for the member countries to discuss the latest developments.
He described the global financial crisis as an upheaval that led to recession in many economies.
"In the UAE, the crisis is more of a challenge that requires us to take a pause to re-arrange our priorities as we move on. The UAE and rest of the GCC countries enjoy very strong infrastructure which makes a solid platform for new and creative economic thinking." He added that the UAE was focusing mainly on the education and healthcare sectors because "they guarantee progress and prosperity for our people.
Sheikh Mohammed praised the Arab intellectuals who attained prominence worldwide.
"The Arab governments should take steps to win them back. They should provide the ideal environment for them to innovate and to serve their countries in the best way." Sheikh Mohammed urged journalists and writers to always adhere to the truth and to assume responsibility for what they write.
Dr. Ahmed Zewail, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1999), offered the keynote address at the inauguration. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
