Dubai exports up 13pc

Dubai, May 24, 2010 (WAM)- Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry, or DCCI, said on Sunday the total exports by its members recorded a year-on-year 13 per cent jump in April. The total exports of 4,645 members during last month rose to Dh16.8 billion compared to same period in 2009, but the current value is 10 per cent lower than previous month’s Dh18.7 billion exports, according to Dubai Chamber, the daily "Khaleej Times" reported.
The GCC countries remained the largest export destination of Dubai Chamber members with about Dh8.1 billion exports, or 48 per cent of total value during the month. However, a contraction of 16 per cent witnessed in the value from the previous months’ Dh9.6 billion exports. Dubai Chamber members exports to Saudi Arabia contracted by 17 per cent to Dh796 million compared to March exports
Among the GCC countries, exports to the Free Zones in UAE and Bahrain markets posted expansion of 7 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively, to respective values of Dh1.3 billion and Dh352 million. The exports to Kuwait and Oman recorded Dh882 million and Dh510 million respectively.
Exports to major markets outside the GCC also declined, but at slower rate of 7 per cent, leading to a total export total value of Dh7.4 billion for the month, from the previous month’s Dh8 billion. Although Iran continued to be the largest export market for members outside the GCC, export value of Dh3.8 billion actually represented a decline of 10 per cent from the previous months’ Dh4.3 per cent. This was despite the increase in the number of members exporting to the country to 982 and in the number of export shipments to around 4,500.
On the other hand, exports to India grew, tough minimally, from Dh537 million to Dh557 million, despite the decline in the number of exporters and number of shipments to the country. Exports to the non-GCC countries in the top 20 destinations were as follow: Egypt Dh447 million; Iraq Dh413 million; Jordan Dh245 million; Pakistan Dh198 million; Algeria Dh157 million; Sudan Dh125 million; Libya Dh398 million; Syria Dh265 million; Lebanon Dh210 million; and Ethiopia Dh112 million.
The chamber members’ exports rose by Dh6.6 billion to Dh50.8 billion during the first three months of 2010 over the Dh44.2 billion they reported during the first quarter of 2009, according to Dubai Chamber.
In accordance with WTO’s rules on origin of goods crossing customs boundaries, shipments of goods are to be accompanied by Certificates of Origin (COOs), specifying the country/or countries of origin of the goods. Dubai Chamber issues COOs to non-oil shipments of its members, either as export or as re-export. Total value of exports/re-exports generated from these COOs is equivalent to about 70-80 per cent of total value of non-oil exports/re-exports reported by the Dubai Customs.
