UAE is committed to scale UAE - S. Korea economic partnership to new heights: Mohammed
Seoul - May 26, 2010 (WAM)- H.H. Gen. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, termed the winning of the South Korean consortium of a contract to build four nuclear plants as part of the United Arab Emirates's peaceful nuclear programme as the ''largest deal in the history of the two countries''.
In a statement upon arrival in Seoul on a three-day trip to the Asian country, Sheikh Mohammed affirmed the UAE commitment push its cooperation in clean energy, technology, IT and Small and medium scale enterprises SMEs with Korea forward.
Sheikh Mohammed said that he was pleased to visit South Korea, which is tied with United Arab Emirates by a strategic relationship, stressing that President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the UAE, has been giving this relationship great attention to bring it to yet higher levels.
''With the winning of a consortium led by South Korea of a contract to build four reactors as part of the UAE's peaceful nuclear programme, the relations between the two countries have witnessed significant, strategic transformations.
The Abu Dhabi-Seoul deal is the largest in the history of bilateral bonds,'' Sheikh Mohammed remarked.
''The two-way trade exchange is seeing sustained growth underpinning the deep bilateral economic relations and showing a rise of 43 per cent in 2009.
Korea is on the top of the list of key trade partners of the UAE and Korean investment in the UAE is also on the rise with more than 120 companies operating in several sectors including heavy industries and IT,'' the UAE top official said.
This, he affirmed, is a clear indicator of the growing joint interests with the UAE ranking as the second largest oil exporter to Korea. The UAE is also considered the second major importer from Korea in the Middle East.
Sheikh Mohammed added that the two countries had signed a slew of bilateral agreements to broaden the scope of joint cooperation, citing the a joint agreement inked by Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and Korean Ministry of Finance in November 2009 for planning a long-term budget within the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
''In fact, the Emirati-Korean bonds stem out of a common political will and complete understanding of the nature of mutual interests, a motive that provides them with more opportunities for diversification and strength giving them a lot of dynamism and flexibility in a way that ensures further growth in future,'' the UAE official added.
''As we highlight the importance of the strategic bonds between the UAE and South Korea, we are looking forward for more avenues of joint cooperation and action to address regional and international challenges, advance and support peace and stability in the world and maintain joint coordination in foreign policy issues.
Given this progress in bilateral links, Sheikh Mohammed welcomed Korean investment to the UAE, calling the private sector to play its aspired role in developing these ties for the best interest of the two countries. ''We are striving to boost these bonds in various fields like clean energy, technology, IT and Small and medium scale enterprises SMEs,'' he stressed.
''The Korean development model is really impressive and we in the UAE, under our wise leadership, have built an open, vibrant economy...we also aspire for developing and deepening our relations with other active economic powers in the world today including Korea,'' Sheikh Mohammed affirmed.
''We hope our visit would be instrumental in bolstering these distinguished ties between the two friendly countries through energising the economic and investment partnership in new sectors so we can push the joint cooperation drive to the level we are all aspiring for to the benefit of our peoples,'' Sheikh Mohammed concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
