UAE to stand candidate for UN Human Rights Council's membership
Geneva - UAE Permanent Representative to the UN European Headquarter Obaid Salem Al Za'abi has lauded the statement delivered yesterday by Navi Pillay, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, at the opening of the fourteenth regular session of the Human Rights Council, saying it contributes in presenting issues of common interest and enriching debate about them.
Addressing the session, Al Za'abi expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the High Commissioner for Human Rights for adopting transparency and cooperation that allow all members to share views and exchange consultations which will consequently iron differences and lead to enhancement of human rights.
He congratulated the elected and re-elected countries for the human rights body and said ''I'm pleased to announce that the Government of the UAE has decided to nominate itself for membership of the council for the term (2012-2015) out of its belief in the important role of human rights in building and developing societies''.
He also praised the recent visit paid by the UN Higher commissioner to the UAE as part of her Gulf tour. He indicated the UAE government was satisfied with that visit which allowed her to see by herself the achievements the UAE has made in human rights and identify areas for improvement. He also renewed the UAE government's full will and readiness for pursuing dialogue and cooperation with the Commissioner office for boosting relations in all domains.
He added that UAE delegation added its voice to a statement issued by the Islamic group in condemning the criminal, inhuman aggression committed by the Israeli occupation troops against the humanitarian aid convoy as a flagrant violation of the international law and unjustifiable breach of the simple humanitarian norms. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
