UAE Foreign Minister to participate in Joint Meeting of GCC-ASEAN

Singapore - June 1, 2010 (WAM) His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs will participate in the Second Joint Meeting of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers which begins tomorrow in Singapore.
The meeting aims to strengthen cooperation between GCC and ASEAN countries and will give approval to the work plan that had been proposed during the first ministerial meeting held in Bahrain in 2009, which focuses on developing investment horizons through economic cooperation and development and cooperation in matters of education, culture and information and setting its implementation mechanisms.
The meeting will also discuss the work plan for the years 2010 - 2012 and the potential for cooperation in trade and investment through the support of the Secretariat for each of the GCC and the ASEAN countries as well as exchanging visits to identify the prospects for economic integration between the two sides.
Besides the meeting will discuss the possibility of organising a "round table dialogue" between economic officials of GCC and ASEAN to discuss a number of topics, such as, the possibility to reach the Trade and Investment Framework Agreement "TIFA" for economic, investment and technical cooperation, and the possibility of reaching Free Trade Agreement, "FTA" and establishing distribution centres in the GCC to facilitate trade under both systems.
The meetings of senior officials from both sides began today to prepare and finalise the final joint statement for the second ministerial meeting.
It should be mentioned that the "ASEAN dialogue with the GCC" held its first Joint Ministerial Conference in Manama, Bahrain during the period from 29 to June 30, 2009, leading to the adoption of a common vision for the future relationship between both sides. While a joint work plan 2010-2012 was developed for the cooperation between the two groups, including a free trade agreement between two sides, economic cooperation and development, education, culture and media. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
