RCA completes 55 out of 100 houses for poor families in West Bank
Ramallah - June 6, 2010 (WAM)The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has completed construction of 55 out of 100 housing units of a Dh 13 million housing project being financed by the UAE relief agency and executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the West Bank.
Nader Atta, Regional Director UNDP in the West Bank, told WAM that 33 houses were handed out to the poorest families in a number of Palestinian towns and villages and finishing touches were being added to another 22 units which will be distributed according to a time schedule.
''About 50 per cent of construction works has been carried out in the housing project which is tipped as one of the major and most valuable projects being undertaken by the UNDP in Palestine. It is the only UNDP project whose value passed the one million dollar mark,'' he noted.
The project, he explained, had turned the miserable condition of these beneficiary poor families which had lived in worn-out houses or tents into a stable, decent life. Each house of two bed rooms is designed according to modern architectural concepts and costs Dh 130,000. The house is also designed to accommodate future expansions.
''One hundred illegible families have been chosen from ten provinces in the West Bank by special committee according to a set of criteria including the number of family members and the difficult living condition,' he added. Beneficiary families have said they were grateful to the RCA for securing these shelters for them.
Fatima Hassan from Jenin said she and her nine children had been waiting for this house for more than two years as her house was demolished by the Israeli occupation authorities. She thanked the RCA for offering her this good assistance.
Saleh Ahmed Al Qasim from Salfit, paid great tribute to the leadership and government of the UAE for enabling him to own this house which he had even never dreamt of because of his poverty. He said the Israeli occupation forces razed down his house four years ago. ''It's a favour from God through the benevolent people of the UAE,'' he added.
Another woman in Nables which lost her husband and a son said she and her children spent long nights in the open during the severe winter and scorching summer. Her jubilant kids wrote a signboard read ''Thanks to the RCA and the UAE'' at the door of the house.
Another mother of seven children who lost their breadwinner during the uprising could believe the good news when she was handed the key of her new house, ending a suffering of three years of living in tents. She prayed God to grant UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan long life. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
