Cameron: The deep friendship between the UK and the UAE is based on a unique, shared history and common interests

Abu Dhabi, June 13, 2010 (WAM)- British Prime Minister David Cameron asserted that the friendship between UAE and UK is deep and is based on a unique, shared history and common interests. "The deep friendship between the UK and the UAE is based on a unique, shared history and common interests. But even more important than these is our common future. We are committed to strengthening our cooperation on defence and security, as long-standing friends with shared vital interests. Also, with so many important business relationships and investments in both our countries, we both want to build and develop our economic ties", said Mr. Cameron, in a press statement issued by the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
Cameron completed his visit to the UAE on Saturday after meeting President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
He also met members of the UAE Cabinet and senior state officials during his brief visit to the country.
A Downing Street spokesperson said: "The Prime Minister was delighted to meet UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, members of the UAE Cabinet and senior officials during his visit".
This was one of Cameron's first overseas visits as Prime Minister, highlighting the importance that the UK government attaches to the UK-UAE relationship.
Cameron's visit followed a visit by UK Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox, to the United Arab Emirates on 6-7 June. Dr Fox held discussions with Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, on international, regional and bilateral issues. Dr Gargash welcomed Dr Fox and commended the pace of progress in cooperation between the two friendly countries.
UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, William Hague, has invited UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed to make an early visit to London. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
