Sheikha Lubna holds meetings with US officials, discusses bilateral cooperation

Washinton DC June 21, 2010 (WAM)- Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Foreign Trade, held meetings with more US officials on the sidelines of her current official visit to Washington.
She met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, Neil Wolen, the Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury, Mrs. Melanie Ferfier, the Women's Ambassador in the United States, and California Congresswoman Mrs. Laura Richardson.
During her talks with the US Secretary of Commerce, both sides discussed the mechanisms by which to boost commercial exchange and investments between both countries. They also discussed putting in place strategies and initiatives that can be used to shed light on the huge benefits that could be reaped from conducting commercial activities in the UAE.
She also highlighted, during the meeting, the various commercial and investment opportunities that are available in the UAE, underlining the strength of the UAE's economy and it dynamic and strategic diversity.
Sheikha Lubna also called upon US Companies to intensify their dealings with the UAE's markets and companies and to create commercial partnerships in various industrial, service, and technological fields. She also extended an invitation to Secretary Locke to visit the UAE with a US commercial and investment delegation.
For his part, Locke expressed his satisfaction with the current level of commercial ties between the UAE and the US, expressing his country's hopes to strengthen these ties even further in all fields.
The US minister, who possesses a vast experience in the field of aiding US companies expand to global markets, expected UAE - US commercial activities to grow and expand in the near future.
Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi also discussed with the Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury, Neil Wolen, the bilateral ties that exist between both countries and the current global economic situation. The meeting, which took place at the US Treasury Building, she highlighted the measures that were undertaken by the UAE to confront the repercussions of the Global Financial Crisis, and how they succeeded in curtailing their effects on the UAE national economy, affirming the sturdiness of the UAE's economy and its ability to bypass global challenges as a result of the strength and diversity of its sectors, especially the non-oil sectors that have contributed 71% of the country's GDP last year.
UAE minister pointed out that the state's economic activity indicators are continuing to improve adding that the UAE's economy registered a 1.3% increase last year, and that it is expected to registered a 3.2% increase this year.
She underlined the importance of increasing the exchange of trade delegations and incentivising companies to invest in the important and dynamic sector's of both countries.
For his part, Deputy Secretary Wolen stressed that the US Economy was improving and that retail market consumer confidence was also improving, adding that the United States was monitoring what was happening in the Euro Zone.
Sheikha Lubna also met with Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at-large for Women's Issues at the US State Department and highlighted the advanced positions attained by Emirati women in the UAE society. She said that the UAE has become a role model in the Arab and Islamic world in this regard and that the state's wise leadership and government have been keen on developing the role of women in society.
She added that UAE women now hold leadership, specialised, and technical positions in both public and private sectors, pointing out to the growth being witnessed in the commercial activities of Emirati businesswomen.
For her part, Verveer expressed the US Government's interest in the positive developments and advanced levels being attained by Emirati women in all economic, commercial and social fields.
Sheikha Lubna also held a meeting with California Congresswoman Laura Richardson at the US Congress and discussed means to boost cooperation and share expertise in various fields such as transport, shipping and port management.
She highlighted the positive developments that the UAE economy is registering, and the advanced infrastructure and economic diversification strategy that the UAE is following.
For her part, Laura Richardson underlined the importance of boosting commercial ties between the United Arab Emirates and the United States, indicating that her state of California is home to some of the largest commercial and investment companies.
Juma Al Kait, the Executive Director of Foreign Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Trade, and So'oud Al Nuwies, the Commercial Attach ' of the UAE Embassy in Washington also attended the meeting.
Non-oil trade between the UAE and the United States of America is valued at US$ 12.2 billion. The US is considered the 3rd most important trade partner for the UAE. The State of Washington is considered the number one commodity exporter to the UAE, with an overall commodity export value of US 2.8 Billion last year, while the State of California is considered the fourth exporter to the UAE with an export value of USD 1.2 Billion through the export of products that are primarily from the aircraft, automobile and computer sectors. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
