Scientific research budget in government universities is low: Nahyan
H.E. Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, announced that his ministry was implementing an ambitious plan to raise the international ranking of UAE universities.
The UAE University was ranked among the top 400 universities in the world and the Ministry is undertaking a plan to improve the ranking of the leading UAE higher institution to join the best 100 high education providers in the world," Sheikh Nahyan said in a reply to a question raised by the FNC member, Hamad Al Madfa about non-selection of any of UAE government universities among the top 500 universities in the world. The 13th session of the house was chaired by its Speaker Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair.
Sheikh Nahyan added that the Zayed University is also striving to become a universal higher education institution at par with internationally recognised benchmarks.
He said the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) is enjoying international academic accreditation and seen as an outstanding model for the technical and technological education in the region and the world, a privilege qualifying it to enter the club of best academic institutions in the world.
''Becoming a world university is not just achieved through announcement of plans rather than through diligent and persistent work on all fronts and through interwoven measures to get knowledge about standards and performance indicators that realise the international ranking,'' he explained.
According to Sheikh Nahyan, scientific research is denominating factor and key condition for upgrading government higher education institutions towards international standing.
He indicated that funding of scientific research is weak in the UAE, noting that the scientific research budget in the UAE University and Zayed University stand at Dh 40 million a year ageist US$ 680 million at Harvard University and US$ 4 billion at California State University. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
