Arab foreign ministers meet in Abu Dhabi
Arab foreign ministers held a meeting yesterday at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi which was presided over by UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in presence of Arab League's Secretary General Amr Musa.
The meeting, which was also attended by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State Reem Al Hashemy, and a number of Arab foreign ministers, discussed prospects of cooperation between the Arab countries and the UAE as the latter is preparing to host tomorrow the first ever Pacific Island-Arab League Summit entitled "Prospects for Cooperation between the Arab world and the Pacific Islands".
Sheikh Abdullah met with the representatives of the Pacific countries taking part in the summit. He stressed the importance of developing commercial, economic and investment relations between the two sides.
The talks also focused on boosting trade exchange and setting strategies for mutual benefits.
Sheikh Abdullah gave an overview on the investment opportunities available in the UAE. He referred to the country's robust and diversified economy and called on the companies in the pacific countries to leverage partnerships with UAE businesses in industrial, service and technology domains.
Today's meeting is set to create the foundation for a strong friendship and cooperation framework between the Pacific island states and the countries of the Arab world and follows in the footsteps of the Pacific Islands Partnership programme launched earlier this year committing 183 million dirham (US$50 million) to finance specific projects and partnerships in the Pacific Islands in key development areas, including renewable energy, education, social and health care services as well as infrastructure.
High on the meeting's agenda is the keynote speech of Sheikh Abdullah. Other speakers include Amr Musa, the head of Libyan delegation, and Crown Prince of Tonga, Tupouto'a Lavaka.
A presentation on the challenges facing Arab world will be given, to be followed by a presentation of Pacific Islands challenges. Reem Al Hashemy will give a presentation on the partnership programme with the Pacific Islands. The day will see other presentations about Masdar and Abu Dhabi Development Fund. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
