Assilah Festival acts as channel of communication between North and South; Khalifa

Assilah, Morocco - July 12, 2010 (WAM)- UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has lauded the Assilah Festival in Morocco as a cultural initiative that fosters the language of dialogue, implants values of tolerance and acts as a bridge of cultural communication between the North and South.
''The selection of ''Renewable Energy'' as the theme of the 32nd Assilah Festival underlines the philosophy of the festival by establishing culture as a container for development,'' Sheikh Khalifa said in an inaugural address read on his behalf at the opening of the festival by Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development. H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President's Representative, attended the opening ceremony of the festival during which the UAE was unveiled as the Official Guest of Honour for the festival, which runs from July 10th to July 27th.
Sheikh Khalifa congratulated King Mohammed VI of Morocco on his 11th accession day, and highlighted the depth and strength of the UAE-Morocco ties.
This year's session, the UAE President, added, provides an ideal opportunity for the UAE to apprise the participants of its efforts in deployment of renewable energy and its civilisational, historic, cultural and heritage contributions.
Sheikh Khalifa praised the Assilah festival founder, Mohamed Benaissa, for assembling this crowd of prominent thinkers and innovators and for his continuous persistence to establish the gathering as one of the key media organs to promote ''values of our authentic Arab and Islamic civilisation'' and a model for interaction of cultures and a bridge linking the originality of the past with the modernity of the present.
The UAE leader considered the selection of the UAE as the guest of honour and renewable energy as the headline theme of the festival this year as step towards the path of human development and carries multiple significances and dimensions that go beyond the existing bilateral ties to open up new broader horizons to meet challenges ''our world is facing today''.
''This is a confirmation of the role the festival plays as a bridge of cultural communication between the east and west and north and south. This year's theme translates the importance role of culture as an umbrella that embraces terms of the age and its transformations in a way that protects, revives and defend heritage,'' the UAE head of state added.
''The selection of renewable energy as the theme of this year's edition does not only demonstrates tribute to our country's efforts for developing clean, economic and environmental-friendly sources of energy but also consolidation of the festival's philosophy in making culture as an instrument for serving development,'' he noted.
Sheikh Khalifa hoped the gathering would provide a window for the UAE to inform the Moroccan people and participants about its unique renewable and clean energy experiment and present its heritage and creativity in areas like culture, poetry, arts, and music as well as its civilisational contributions over the ages. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
