UAE showcases world's tallest building in Shanghai Expo

Shanghai - July 21, 2010 (WAM)- The competition to create the world's tallest building has been an ongoing ‘battle of giants' among cities, civil engineers, architects and construction companies. Shanghai already boasts some of the world's tallest buildings but the prize for the tallest on our planet has proved elusive.
The arrival at EXPO 2010 of a model of the present record holder, Dubai's Burj Khalifa, has brought the challenges associated with super-tall structures to the attention of Chinese audiences.
Burj Khalifa (Khalifa Tower) is the tallest man-made structure ever built, at 828 m (2,717 ft). The building officially opened on 4 January 2010, and is part of the new 2 km2 (490-acre) flagship development called Downtown Dubai at the 'First Interchange' along Sheikh Zayed Road, near Dubai's main business district.
In June 2010, Burj Khalifa was the recipient of the 2010 Best Tall Building Middle East '&' Africa award by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. The total cost for the project was about US$1.5 billion; and for the entire 'Downtown Dubai', US$20 billion.
To support the unprecedented height of the building, the engineers developed a new structural system called the buttressed core, which consists of a hexagonal core reinforced by three buttresses that form the ‘Y' shape. This structural system enables the building to support itself laterally and keeps it from twisting.
The spire of Burj Khalifa is composed of more than 4,000 tonnes (4,400 ST; 3,900 LT) of structural steel. The central pinnacle pipe weighing 350 tonnes (390 ST; 340 LT) was constructed from inside the building and jacked to its full height of over 200 m (660 ft) using a strand jack system.
The UAE Pavilion at EXPO 2010 is one of the most popular pavilions at the World Exposition in Shanghai. Visitors are queuing for two to three hours to access the interior exhibitions which are based on three unique ‘experiences' created by special audiovisual presentations. The EMAAR model of Burj Khalifa is proving to be a strong attraction and one that the UAE Team hopes will persuade more Chinese people to make the journey to the United Arab Emirates and see this 21st century ‘wonder' for themselves.
The UAE pavilion at Expo is also running a ‘Dream Journey Prize Draw' that offers the lucky winners one week holidays in the Emirates. The draw has been sponsored by the country's leading travel, leisure and hospitality groups including Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority; Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing; Tourism '&' Development Investment Company; Anantara; Emirates Airline; Emirates Palace Hotel; the Jumeirah Group; Rotana Hotels; Sharjah Tourism, and the owners of Burj Khalifa, EMAAR. The draw can be entered online at www.uaepavilion.com; www.uaechina.com.cn and at the pavilion itself. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
