The sales of traditional market at Liwa Date Festival 2010 pass Dh600,000

Abu Dhabi, July 22, 2010 (WAM)- Sales of the traditional market at ongoing Liwa Date Festival 2010 have so far crossed Dh600, 000 in the fifth day of the festival organised by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).
The festival, which kicked off last Saturday and will last until July 26, is being held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs.
More visitors have continued to flock to the location of the festival at Al Gharbia (the Western Region) to test the pure spirit of UAE heritage. The unique traditional market built on the location of the festival reflects the beautiful women handcrafts productions. Women of different age groups are displaying their artefacts in more than 159 shops at the market.
All the traditional products, which were crafted by Emirati women, were made from dried palm leafs and other natural materials from the surrounding environment such as wool or cotton.
On the other hand, US Ambassador Richard Olson has visited the festival yesterday and toured in the traditional market and the specialised exhibition.
In the best date competition 15 winners in the category of Khnazi dates were rewarded yesterday. The first three winners were given four wheel drive cars, while other winners were awarded cash prizes between Dh40, 000 and Dh5.000.
The festival also showcases the biggest artificial date fruit. The fruit (10.5 meters length, 5 meter width and 6 meters high) has being approved initially by Genius for world records as the biggest artificial fruit and final approval will be submitted soon. The fruit includes a traditional majlis for 20 people. The idea of the fruit came from poet Hamad bin Sarhan Al Darei. The manufacturing of the fruit lasted one year at cost of Dh2 million. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
