Abdullah bin Zayed, Cypriot FM hold talks

Nicosia - July 29, 2010 (WAM)- H.H Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan and Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou on Wednesday signed an agreement on the mutual exemption of UAE and Cypriot holders of diplomatic and special passports from entry visas. Sheikh Abdullah and Kyprianou also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on diplomatic consultations between the two ministries.
The two sides also held talks at the premises of the Cypriot Foreign Ministry in Nicosia. Talks also took in the close bilateral relations between the countries as well as relations between Cyprus and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and ways to further promote them in all areas.
The Cypriot issue, current regional developments including the Palestinian issue, the siege imposed on Gaza as well as the peace process efforts and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
Sheikh Abdullah, in a joint press conference, stressed the UAE's interest in boosting the friendly relations with Cyprus and the opening of an UAE embassy in Cyprus. He expressed hopes for expanding cultural and economic cooperation.
The UAE Foreign Minister also called for opening cooperation with Cyprus on ports management, an area in which he said the UAE has wide experience with 50 ports worldwide in its portfolio.
The two ministers expressed support for solving regional conflicts through diplomatic means and in accordance with the UN's charters and international legitimacy.
Present at the talks were UAE Ambassador to Lebanon and Non-resident Ambassador to Cyprus Rahma Al-Za'abi, Director of Europe at the Foreign Ministry Mohammed Saif Hilal Al-Shehhi, Director of Economic Affairs at the Ministry Jassim Mohammed Al-Qasimi as well as senior officials from the Cypriot Foreign Ministry. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
