UAE supports inscription of Saudi Arabia's At-Turaif District on the UNESCO World Heritage List
The UAE delegation participating in the 34th World Heritage Committee meeting, which concluded in the Brazilian capital yesterday, announced that it had supported the inscription of Saudi Arabia's At-Turaif District in ad-Dir'iyah on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
During the session, 39 properties in 33 countries were considered for inscription on the UNESCO's expanding WH List.
Mohammed Khamis Hareb, Director General of National Council for Tourism and Antiquities and the head UAE delegation to the Committee on World Heritage, told reporters in Dubai yesterday that the delegation also supported the nomination of Sheikha Mai Al Khalifa, Bahrain's Minister of Culture and Information to chair the forthcoming session of the Committee in Bahrain next year .
Muhairi explained that the UAE, in coordination with delegations from other Arab countries, had lent full support to the inscription of the Saudi Arabian site in the World Heritage List. The delegation also gave support to the proposals for the protection of the Old City of Jerusalem from the effects of excavation and destruction by the Israeli occupation. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
