SEWA commissions new 3 million gallon unit in Kalba

Sharjah, Aug 30, 2010 (WAM)- Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA) has announced the commissioning of a new water desalination and distribution unit in Kalba to produce 3 MGPD on Reverse Osmosis system.
Eng. Rashid Ibrahim Demas, Deputy Director General of SEWA, said SEWA were installing water and electricity improvement projects in the Eastern Region to meet growing demand for these services due to urban and demographic expansion.
Eng. Muza Al Za'abi, head of operations at Kalba station, said construction phase of the unit, which started in November 2007, cost Dh 29.6 million while the turbines cost Dh 39 million.
''Trial operation commenced in May 2010 after a new reservoir was built in January 2010 at a total cost of Dh 7.4 million,'' she added.
''After the unit going on stream, pumping of water will increase from the Kalba station to 24 hours from 17 hours. The new unit will secure water to the city up to 2020,''she added.
''The unit uses advanced purification technology to desalinate high quality clean water in compliance with criteria and standards set out by the World Health Organisation. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
