UAE calls for greater transparency on labour-import regulations

Geneva - Sept 1,2010 (WAM)- UAE Permanent Representative to United Nations in Geneva Ambassador Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, called on sending and receiving countries of workforce to join forces with international specialised organisations to embed transparency into all laws and regulations dealing with import of workers.
Al Za'abi was speaking at a meeting hosted by the UAE mission in Geneva for deliberation of the international standards for importing workers from Asian countries.
The activity was attended by representatives from the International Labour Organisation (ILO), UN High Commission for Human Rights, International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), and Government of Switzerland as well as labour experts and heads of permanent diplomatic missions in Geneva.
The UAE diplomat said the function provided an ideal platform for conducting a responsible dialogue between the labour sending and receiving countries including the GCC states over best mechanisms for protecting workers during recruitment period against deception and abuse of their rights before they move to receiving countries. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
